A group of families representing people unhappy with the way alleged crimes are handled by cruise lines issued a press release with recommendations for reporting and investigating onboard incidents. International Cruise Victims (ICV) calls its plan "Cruise line Law Adherence Monitoring Personnel" (CLAMP) and says it would require an independent security force onboard all cruise ships. ICV concludes that "current onboard cruise line security management appears to lack adequate passenger and crew safety training, especially in response to reports of incidents." The ICV release includes a quote by Congressman Christopher Shays (R-Conn.), who has called federal hearings on cruise ship safety. "I am working on a bipartisan legislative proposal to improve disclosure on crimes on cruise ships in order to increase the transparency of the industry," Shays said.
In response, the Cruise Lines International Association issued the following statement: "The cruise industry shares the commitment of providing a safe and secure environment for cruise passengers and aiding those who experience otherwise.
